Dutch engineers make 'robot legs' for stroke patientsDutch engineers make 'robot legs' for stroke patients
    Posted: 23 September 2011
Scientists in the Netherlands are using robotic legs to try to improve the movement of stroke patients. The prototype device is called the Lower-extremity Powered ExoSkeleton, or LOPES, and works by training the body and mind of a patient to recover a more natural step. The machine is also being tested on spinal injury patients who have recovered some restricted movement in their legs. It is hoped a commercial version could be made available to rehabilitation centres around the world as early as next year...

MABEL Bipedal Robot is Fast Enough to Run You DownMABEL Bipedal Robot is Fast Enough to Run You Down
    Posted: 16 August 2011
It was only a year ago that the University of Michigan's MABEL biped robot was breaking its ankles trying to walk over rough terrain. Now the robot is defying death once again by becoming the world's fastest bipedal robot, with the ability to sprint at up to 10.9 kph. More specifically, MABEL is the world's fastest "kneed" bipedal robot, which just means that it's the fastest robot that can run in a similar manner to us humans, leaving those Toyota robots (4.3 kph) and ASIMO (3.7 kph) in the dust...

Robots venture inside FukushimaRobots venture inside Fukushima
    Posted: 18 April 2011
In pictures: With radiation levels too high for humans, robots are being used to explore inside the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan. UK defence technology firm QinetiQ has supplied a range of remote controlled machines that will enable engineers to look around inside the Fukushima nuclear plant. The Talon robot is known as a "radiation first responder". Its main job will be to move through rubble inside the plant and send back radiation readings. Talon was previously used at the World Trade Centre site in New York City to monitor hazardous chemicals...

    "Jamming" Robot Gripper Gets Official
    Posted: 25 October 2010
The hand works best on hard, dry, geometrically complex objects like screwdrivers and toy jacks. It has more trouble with flat objects like plastic discs and porous objects like cotton balls, because the air holes weaken the suction. It also can't grip anything bigger than half its size-the biggest items the team picked up were two one-gallon jugs of water...
